Sibutramine (Meridia)
- Works by making you feel full after you have begun to
eat
- Expensive
- Side effects: constipation, nausea, dry mouth, insomnia,
dizziness, hypertension, irregular cycles, headache, drowsiness
and tachycardia
- Should not use if uncontrolled BP or with other appetite
suppressants at the same time
Orlistat (Xenical, Alli)
- Works by blocking 1/3 absorption of fat intake
- Expensive
- Side effects: oily spotting, flatus with discharge, fecal
urgency, fatty/oily stool, fecal incontinence
- Sometimes helpful if patient has history of constipation
- Typically the safest diet pill
